Recently, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warned U.S. patients that it is investigating the possibility of a link between the psoriasis drug marketed as Raptiva (efalizumab) and at least three deaths caused by a rare brain infection called progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy. The agency is looking into a fourth, unconfirmed, report of the deadly infection in a patient taking Raptiva.

Three patients developed multifocal leukoencephalopathy, a disorder of the central nervous system, and other serious side effects after use of the drug, Raptiva (efalizubmab), for over three years. Two of these patients died. Prescribers should review the treatment of all patients currently taking the drug with a view to stopping treatment and should not issue any new prescriptions.

Efalizubmab’s effects on the immune system can last for about 8-12 weeks so specialist dermatology nurses should monitor patients for infections and neurological symptoms during this time, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) has advised. Progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy is considered an opportunistic infection, seen most often in those with compromised immune systems, including cancer and transplant patients and those with AIDS.

Children With Eczema Have Higher Risk Of Developing ADHD

Latest research on eczema has found out that children that suffer from eczema are more likely to also have attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) compared to those children who doesn’t have eczema, reports a study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association.

According to the German researchers who conducted the study, the researchers found 5.2 percent of eczema patients had ADHD, compared with 3.4 percent of the eczema-free group, Health Magazine reports that the study involved 1,436 children between the ages of 6 and 17, who had atopic dermatitis, and 1,436 kids without it.

Study authors say kids with atopic eczema are 54 percent more likely to have ADHD than those without it. However, the link between eczema and ADHD needs to be confirmed by additional research, they said. It’s possible that eczema-related itching or sleep disturbances may exacerbate ADHD symptoms in some children, the researchers suggested. It’s also possible that atopic eczema and ADHD could share an underlying cause.
