The Buzz About Doctor Visits For Kids’ Eczema

November 28, 2007 on 4:35 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

New research shows, the number of doctor visits for children with atopic dermatitis which is a type of eczema has risen in the recent years.

There were 620,000 pediatric visits for atopic dermatitis in 1997, shown in the study. That number rose to 1.7 million pediatric visits in 2003 and dropped to 850,000 doctor visits in 2004.

Basing on two large CDC databases, figures have been tracked the medical care for children and teens as well.

The trend was stronger for African-American and Asian children than for white children, and for toddlers and young kids, compared with older children and teens.

The researchers are sitll not aren’t sure what accounts for th trend. Researchers include Karen Horii, M.D., a dermatologist of Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics in Kansas City, Mo.

Children’s most common inflammatory skin disease like atopic dermatitis is becoming more common. Horii’s team suggests that doctors are getting better at diagnosing it.

The 2003 peak in pediatric visits for atopic dermatitis may be linked to a new class of eczema drugs called topical calcineurin inhibitors that debuted that year. Parents have been prompted to take their children to the pediatrician due to the buzz about those drugs.

The study shows that most doctors did not write prescriptions for kid’s atopic dermatitis.
It is not clear how many kids had all those appointments with doctors because the data focus on doctor visits, not the number of patients.  Some children may have had several appointments for their atopic
dermatitis.

The Key Mechanism That Cab Help Reduce Eczema Outbreak Is Organic Milk

November 27, 2007 on 3:57 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

The incident of eczema in infants fed on organic dairy products, and whose mothers also consumed organic dairy products, is 36pc lower than in children who consume conventional dairy products have been showed in a newly published studies.

Organic foods contain higher levels of beneficial nutrients than non-organic foods is shown by a significant body of evidence and it claimed to be the primary example of a definite health impact of organic food consumption being published in a peer reviewed journal.

The scientists could only hypothesise as to the mechanism which delivered this protection since the study confirmed that it is the organic dairy consumption that protects against the development of eczema.

It is also proven by researcher’s study that more beneficial nutrients are found in organic and there is an absence of harmful additives. It also suggested that organic food is best for your health.

The higher levels of conjugated linoleic acids (CLAs) are not only found in cows’ milk but also in the breast milk of women consuming organic milk, this has been confirmed by a recent separate study.

This current study, is claimed to underpin the intelligent guess that the higher levels of CLAs in the breast milk of organic milk drinking mothers are a key mechanism in reducing eczema outbreak, as well as the organic dairy diet of the infants themselves.

Blood Clue Giving Birth To An Effective Eczema Treatment

November 23, 2007 on 4:54 pm | In Uncategorized | No Comments

What scientists believe is that they have found two blood chemicals which are related to eczema.   One chemical is labelled ’substance P’ and the other called BNDF for brain-derived neurotrophic factor. These were identified by a team at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

To be able to monitor how much they scratched and their bodies are affected, they designed an ‘itchometer’ for children to wear on their wrists in bed.

When children are scratching, two blood chemicals increases.

To be able to lead to an effective treatment, scientists say they can now examine how the chemicals are interrelated to the condition.

Allergies can induce eczema, or be atopic, which is basically the genetic form that can be treated but not cured completely.

Around the world, itchy eczema affects one in ten babies. The figure falls for adults, except in Ireland, where one in ten people have eczema.

The rash and itching can be soothe by steroid creams, but these are not for long-term use and can make the skin thin. Until today, the causes of eczema and the itch mechanism are not yet fully understood.
