Types of Psoriasis Medications

Psoriasis medications are very important in life of a skin disorder patient. There is absolutely no way to live with those unpleasant symptoms without doing something to get some relief. Like with the other chronic illnesses and conditions, the medical community is working tirelessly to create more effective treatments, and of course, find a permanent cure. People with psoriasis have a few options available to them and those options are growing everyday. Here’s a look at a few that are being used most often right now.

  • topical creams and gels
  • phototherapy or light therapy
  • systemic therapy

Topical creams, also known as non biological therapy, are the most frequently used treatments for psoriasis. One group of these products focuses on the use of steroids. These are very effective and have few side effects. They are also relatively inexpensive for the patient. Another group of topical ointments include retinoids. Retinoids are related to vitamin A and help to balance the genes that are involved in the production of psoriasis lesions. The final category of topical treatments used is the Vitamin D3 Analog series. These work to inhibit the excessive production of keratinocytes.

Another type of psoriasis medication is more of a therapy. Light therapy is especially helpful for people with psoriasis that topical use wasn’t benefiting. In some cases the two are used together for maximum success. The rays of UVB ultraviolet light are most often used. Even after the lesion breakout is over, this therapy can help keep the skin clear of the symptoms of psoriasis. PUVA light is beneficial as well. It has had success with keeping the skin clear for long, extended periods of time. With this type of light therapy, a medication is sometimes added to the treatment plan to make the skin even more sensitive to the positive effects of the PUVA light.

For people with psoriasis that haven’t responded to topical or phototherapy, systemic therapy is the next option. Methotrexate is a psoriasis medication that is used to treat moderate to severe forms of psoriasis. It helps to block the production of skin cells that are developing too rapidly and leading to the production of lesions. Acitretin is another of the systemic therapy family. Its job is to alter the information in the genes that controls the coding for proteins involved in psoriasis.
