Searching for Psoriasis Causes

There are several theories about psoriasis causes floating around. Unfortunately, the underlying cause isn't known. A lot of work is being done each day to try to answer the puzzle of what causes this common skin condition. Without knowing the exact cause the dermatology community is left shooting in the dark. There are treatments for psoriasis, but we need the cause to effectively find the cure.

That isn't to say that the many types of psoriasis aren't livable. They are and they are somewhat effectively treated. Scientists aren't totally in the dark. They know some of the triggers, who are most likely to be affected, and have formulated some fairly useful treatments.

The one known psoriasis cause is an abnormal production of the immune cells on the skin. What isn't known is why the cells begin to produce too many and why they are mutated in the first place. One theory suggests that the mutation begins with a predisposition to the genetic code. This makes sense as psoriasis has been shown to dramatically run in families. Another theory hinges on the idea that prior injury or infection may lead the immune cells to go haywire and psoriasis develops from that occurrence.

The leading treatment for psoriasis is topical creams. Some are made with steroids. Another effective ingredient is retinoids, a vitamin A related chemical. In more severe cases or cases when the topical creams aren't satisfactorily effective, doctors often use phototherapy or light therapy. The psoriasis creams and light therapy are often used together for the best results. When those measures prove to be unsuccessful, a group of drugs called systemic therapy is used.

There is a relatively wide group of people who are at risk for psoriasis. For the most part they are Caucasian with a northern European ancestry. Slightly more women than men are affected by psoriasis. The average of onset is around 28 years old. It appears the darker a person's skin is the less likely they are to develop psoriasis. As previously mentioned, family history plays a huge role in the likelihood of contracting this common skin condition. If you live in a tropical climate, you are safer as well.
